Luxembourg

Luxembourg

The name Luxembourg probably derives from Lucilinburhuc, the Small Castle (today: Luxembourg Castel). It was built in 963 by Siegfried, Count of the Ardennes, as his ancestral seat.

The country was a county of the Holy Roman Empire. 1354 became the county a duchy. The Congress of Vienna elevated the duchy to a grand duchy, which it remains until this day. House Luxembourg-Nassau rules since 1890.
