Historical
Peter I, the Great * 1672 in Moscow; † 1725 in St. Petersburg), was Tsar and Grand Duke of Russia from 1682 to 1721 and the first Emperor of the Russian Empire from 1721 to 1725. The epithet "The Great" refers to his achievements, but his height was also commensurate: according to contemporary accounts, Tsar Peter was indeed a giant in stature. Different sources give measurements between 2.01 and 2.15 metres.
The Great Northern War ended in 1721 with the Peace of Nystad. Russia was able to establish itself as the leading power in north-eastern Europe. Immediately after the peace treaty with Sweden, Peter changed his official title from Tsar to Emperor in accordance with Russia's increased foreign policy importance. From then on, Russian rulers bore this title until 1917.
Peter the Great initiated numerous reforms in Russia with the aim of transforming Russia into a modern state. Associated with this was the founding and promotion of the new capital, Saint Petersburg. Cultural modernisation included the introduction of West-Central European dress. A beard tax was imposed on the traditionally long beards. The Julian calendar was introduced in Russia, although the Gregorian calendar was already slowly being adopted in the rest of Europe at this time.
In terms of technology and science, too, Peter I was also guided by the modern models of the time. He initiated the Academy of Sciences and carried out a scriptural reform.
