Erfurt

Erfurt

The city of Erfurt is located in northern Thuringia. It rose in importance as early as 741 when it became part of the archbishopric of Mainz. The archbishops palced a mint in Erfurt from the 11th through the 13th centuries.

In the 12th century even an imperial mint struck coins in Erfurt.

This importance lead to enough power to force Mainz to grant the town self-governing rights. Erfurt was given the right to mint its own coins in 1341 and 1354. Even more power and prestige was gained in the 15th century when Erfurt joined the Hanseatic League.

However, the glory was not to last. 1483 Saxony claimed control over Erfurt and in the Thirty Years' War the town was occupied by Sweden in 1631. The Swedes stayed in control until 1648 and minted primarly ducats in Erfurt.
