The testament of the Elector John George I of Saxony decreed that his three younger sons should also receive their own lands after his death. The Elector died in 1656 and his youngest son Maurice received the territory of the former diocese of Naumburg-Zeitz and some additional areas. He was the first Duke of Saxe-Zeitz.
Just one year later, he began building a residence on the site of the old destroyed bishop's castle: the Moritzburg Castle on the Elster. The construction of the monumental structure lasted for 21 years. It is one of the oldest early Baroque residences in Saxon territories: a well-fortified three-winged building with a monumental tower in the middle of the main wing. The coin offered here provides a view of the courtyard of Moritzburg.
