Emporium Hamburg

Auction 102 - Coins & Medals from May 08 until 11, 2023
Auction 103 - Banknotes & Emergency Money on May 11, 2023

This year, Emporium Hamburg's great spring auction spanned four days with nearly 3500 terrific lots. Both the Antique and German Empire sections as well as Hamburg, City, Great Britain and emergency money from Saarland attracted numerous bidders. As in previous years, this auction took place without hall bidders. Nevertheless, many interesting pieces with attractive estimated prices found new owners in exciting live bidding competitions via telephone and online, and many rarities were able to achieve new high bids.

Auction 102: Coins & Medals

ANCIENT COINS

The antiquity section started with lot 47 (AV Stater from Thrace, under Lysimachus, estimate € 3500,-), the first of many sensational hammer prices of the auction at € 8200. The coins from the Seleucid Empire enjoyed great popularity as well. The excellent AR tetradrachms of Antiochos VI (154-142 BC) each received a hammer price of € 1300 (lot 110, estimate € 1000) and € 1250 (lot 111, estimate € 1000).

WORLD COINS

Out of all the world coins the countries Bolivia and Peru, Great Britain and the United States especially achieved great results. In the area of the United States, especially the gold coins were strongly contested. The magnificent specimen under lot number 1637 (1 Dollar 1922, Grant Memorial, estimated price € 1000) found a new owner at a hammer price of € 1250. Lot 1638 (3 Dollars 1878, Philadelphia) also exceeded its estimate of € 1750 and was handed to the highest bidder at € 2100.

Another surprising highlight was lot 752 from Bulgaria: This bronze medal from 1879 with the portrait of Alexander I (1879-1886) sold for € 3600; the estimate was € 75. Among the Danish coins, lot 815 particularly stood out, a splendid specimen 2 Christian d'or 1847 (estimate € 2600 sold for € 2900).

GREAT BRITAIN

From Great Britain, lot 879, a Jubilee set from 1887 in gold and silver, Victoria with veil, exceeded all expectations: With an estimate of € 6800, the lot received a hammer price of € 10,500. Also remarkable was lot 892, 5 Pounds 1937 (George VI), which achieved a hammer price of € 20,000 (estimate € 11,500). The well-known gold coin 200 Pounds 2019 "Una and the Lion" (lot 894, estimate € 45,000) reached a hammer price of € 50,000.

BOLIVIA AND PERU

The clear favorites of the auction were the collections from Bolivia and Peru, both from the colonial and republican periods. Here, the bids rolled in seemingly never-ending: These coins almost continually fetched many times their estimated price. Out of a total of 574 lots, only 18 can still be found in the post-auction sale. Especially lot 1279 (2 Reales 1843 Po M, Pasco, estimated price € 400) with a hammer price of € 1950 and lot 1308 (8 Reales 1823 LIMA JP, estimated price € 150) with a hammer price of € 4200 caused great bidding joy.

GERMAN STATES AND COINS

In Old Germany, the title piece of the auction has exceeded its estimated price: Lot 1885, the thick double Reichstaler 1680 with title Leopold I. a. d. Frieden von Nijmegen, achieved a hammer price of € 31,000 (estimate € 28,500), not least due to its great rarity. Also from Hamburg, city, the lot 1890 attracted many bids: equipped with the original case, the ½ gold Portuguese 1888 as a splendid specimen could reach a hammer price of € 5600 (estimate € 3500). And also among the German coins a Hamburg coin established itself again far in front. A Ducat 1872 B, Hanover was sold for € 1100 (lot 2141, estimate € 600).

Pieces from old North German collection enjoyed great popularity, including the rare splendid specimens lot 2321 (3 Mark 1909, estimate € 500 sold for € 820) and lot 2323 (3 Mark 1911, estimate € 500 sold for € 800). The Empire in Gold held numerous exciting pieces and accompanying hammer prices: The 10 Mark 1913 G came to € 2200 hammer price (lot 2615, estimate € 1000). The magnificent 20 Mark 1903 from Waldeck und Pyrmont went under the hammer at € 13,000 (lot 2725, estimate € 11,000). The highest bid among the gold coins was received by lot 2721 from Saxe-Meiningen: The 20 Mark 1882 reached a hammer price of € 17,500 with an estimate of € 16,800.

Auction 103: Banknotes and Emergency Money

The second half of the last auction day was reserved solely for banknotes and emergency money. Here, too, numerous bidders were extremly successful. Lot 4003, 10 rupees from Burma, achieved a remarkably high hammer price of € 5800 (estimate € 1200) right at the beginning.

Lot 4003

From the Austro-Hungarian Bank, lot 4045 achieved a high bid of € 1050 (estimate € 100).

Lot 4045

Two "Rote Hunderter" were knocked down far above the estimate: lot 4200 (100 Deutsche Mark 1948, estimate € 1200) with a hammer price of € 1450, and lot 4201 (100 Deutsche Mark 1948, estimate € 800) with a hammer price of € 1850.

Lot 4200 Lot 4201

However, the undisputed highlight of this auction was the title piece from the dependencies: After an exciting bidding battle, the Saarmark note 100 Mark 1947 found a new home with a hammer price of € 10,000 (lot 4328, estimate € 6000).
