Named after a freedom fighter - the Sucre from Ecuador!

The currency Sucre was introduced in Ecuador in 1884 and named after Antonio Jose de Sucre. He was a South American freedom fighter, who with his military successes over the Spanish troops contributed significantly to the independence of Ecuador and its colonial predecessor Quito. He was assassinated in 1830, shortly after Quito's independence from Greater Colombia. Juan Jose Flores, who would later become the country's first president, was considered the mastermind and biggest profiteer of his death. However, the exact circumstances of his death have not been clarified to this day. The Sucre, named after him, was replaced by the US dollar in 2000.
