Historical
Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov - Michael I. , (1596 in Moscow; † 1645 in Moscow).

He was the first Tsar and Grand Prince of Russia from the Romanov dynasty. He reigned from 1613 to 1645. Mikhail was born to the boyar Fyodor Nikitich Romanov-Yuriev, a cousin of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich, and his wife Xenia Ivanovna Shestova on 12 July 1596.

The Romanov family was persecuted by the then ruler of Russia Boris Godunov after a denunciation. The father Fyodor Nikitich was banished under the name "Monk Philaret" to the AntonSiysky Monastery and the mother Xenia Ivanovna as Marfa to a monastery near Lake Onega.

Mikhail was exiled with two of his aunts to the actual home of the Romanovs, the city of Klin, in 1603. Pseudodimitri I rehabilitated the family. From 1605 onwards, the young Mikhail and his parents lived in Rostov.

Mikhail Fedorovich was elected tsar on 3 March 1613 (21 February according to the Julian calendar) and crowned tsar on 21 July 1613 (or 11 July).

His policy in the early years was directed mainly against Poland. Polish troops were besieging Moscow at the time of his election. King Sigismund III of Poland refused to recognise Michael's rule because he wanted his son Władysław IV. Wasa, who had been elected tsar before Michael.

In this demand, the Russians saw the treaty concluded in Tushino in 1610 broken and demanded the return of Smolensk.
