“Germany’s small money until 1871” is synonymic for a rich and exciting area of coin collecting. Chronologically, this area comprises all small money coinages from the early 16th century until the foundation of the Prussian-German Empire in 1871. That means: Mintages of all German Kingdoms, principalities, counties, city states, bishoprics etc. are centered in the focus of examination here. Here is one reason for this enormous richness: Since the 30-Years’-War, there existed nearly 300 sovereign territories. After 1815 there were still 39 federal states part of the German Confederation (Deutscher Bund). Small money of this very era, which by itself – due to its richness – is already something very special, is being collected by connoisseurs systematically. Due to the aforementioned richness there are many possible paths to tread on, in order to explore the historical and numismatic development of Germany.
